Tested ingredients & formulations

WHAT WE TESTED TOGETHER

To determine the impact on biofilm preservation, we examined the potential effect of products on 10 major strains making up the healthy microbiome.

Each ingredient was applied to be tested at the final concentration (w/v) provided by IMCD. The plates were incubated during 48h to 72h to allow biofilm formation by each strain. The amount of biofilm formed in the presence of the product is then measured by numeration and compared to that formed by strains without the product (control).

Other ingredients composing the formulation (preservative and emollient (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride*) as well as the formulation base itself, have also been tested to check their behavior towards the skin microbiome.

GLYCERIN

neutral impact, 100% microbiome-friendly

ASCORBYL TETRAISOPALMITATE

selective activity on C. granulosum, preserving beneficial strains

SODIUM HYALURONATE

targeted activity, preserving >80% of skin flora

Simplex formula and formulas with actives

confirmed tolerance on biofilms with preserved diversity

Scientific collaboration for measurable skin impact

WHY TEST INGREDIENTS ON THE MICROBIOME?

Today, consumers expect skincare that is both effective and respectful of their skin’s natural balance. But not all ingredients are microbiome-friendly. IMCD and Byome Labs have joined forces to build an indexing database of ingredient impacts, based on a rigorous in vitro biofilm testing methodology.

The aim: provide formulators with quantitative microbiome impact scores, enabling more conscious and targeted product development.

The power of biofilm testing

GO BEYOND PLANKTONIC: TEST HOW INGREDIENTS BEHAVE IN BIOFILMS

Unlike traditional testing methods, our analysis focuses on microorganisms in biofilm form, their natural state on the skin. Tested strains include Staphylococcus epidermidis, Cutibacterium acnes, Malassezia globosa and more.
